Leo Solar Eclipse: A Cosmic Identity Shift

You’ve probably already been feeling it...

The energy shifting and changing right underneath your feet.

A bubbling up of things that are ready to be released.

Your identity undergoing a massive rearrangement. 

On August 12th, 2026, at 10:45 am PST, a Total Solar Eclipse is happening at 20 degrees of Leo. 

This is a massive event astrologically speaking, and I want to break down what it means for you. 

We have an eclipse roughly 4x a year, approximately 6 months apart. This phenomenon is visually seen as a blocking of light from one of our luminaries, resulting in momentary darkness here on Earth.

A solar eclipse (which is what we have this week) occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun and blocks its rays, leaving us in total darkness for a short time. A lunar eclipse is when the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon and the Earth's shadow is cast over the Moon, blocking out its light. 

In Astrology, an Eclipse is what happens when a New or Full Moon takes place near one of the Lunar Nodes (aka the North and the South Node), which are mathematical points in the sky that pinpoint where the Sun and the Moon's paths would cross. The North Node represents destiny, fate, growth, and direction. While the South Node represents release, karma, letting go, and clearing. 

This August 12th Eclipse is a Leo South Node Solar Eclipse (or New Moon). So the energy surrounding this time period will have a lot to do with releasing the old and stagnant and cleaning the slate for something new. 

Let's get into what this specific Solar Eclipse means. 

Leo is the sign of the leader, performer, and the ego. It is known as the Lion and is ruled by the sun. When we think about this sign in its essence, it is bold and creative; it shines unapologetically and encourages others to take up space. It honors the inner child and gives them space to play and experience unlimited joy. They know their role as a leader and are confident in assuming that role in their life. They dance and laugh and play and are connected to their courage and their heart. 

While each zodiac sign has its 'high' way of expressing itself, it also has ways of expression that are ‘lower’. Leo energy left unchecked can develop an Ego that is demanding, needy, and insecure. Seeking validation and approval for its work in the world. It may seek attention just to prove to themselves that they’re doing something right. Not shining from a place of truth and heart-led courage, but from a place of Ego and approval. 

With the Sun as Leo’s ruler, this sign is deeply tied to our identity and vitality. What makes you light up? What gives you energy? Who are you at your core? What type of light do you want to extend into the world? How do you honor and take care of that light? What is at the center of your truth?

These are the questions that Leo asks us. 

This South Node Eclipse in Leo is going to be asking us to clear away the versions of ourselves and our identity that are no longer aligned and supporting us. It wants us to remove the seeking of validation within how we show up in the world, and shine with the understanding that you are enough as you are, without the approval of others. 

We’ll be undergoing a dramatic shift within the way we show up and identify with ourselves. Learning how to honor yourself, your goals, your creativity, your joy, your heart, and your truth because you’re worth it no matter what. 

When we are undergoing a purge, especially related to our identity, it can be an emotionally intensive time. Maybe you’ve felt unsure about who you are and who you want to be in this next chapter. Maybe you’ve felt really emotional about an area of your life that you know needs to change. Maybe you know that something isn’t quite working anymore, but you’re scared to close that door and move forward with something else. 

Letting go and releasing huge pieces of ourselves that we’ve known for a long time can be messy and overwhelming. It’s something we’ve lived with or who we’ve been for so long, and thinking about being something else can be hard. The identities we’ve carried have been our comfort zone; they’ve kept us safe. And now we’re being asked to enter into a new chapter, an era, where we begin to align with the version of ourselves that has been ready to surface for a long time now. 

Sometimes the Ego holds on; it fights, and it doesn’t let go easily. Right now, you’re learning to soften into it, reminding yourself that it’s okay to let it go. It’s okay to step forward into this next chapter and honor the new you. 

Eclipses bring about change and transformation. They usher in new beginnings, and sometimes new beginnings start with the closure of something else. By releasing and clearing what is ready to go, we are opening up new space within ourselves to cultivate the new identity, the new energy, the new leader that is ready to emerge. 

New opportunities may arise over the course of the month that allow you to step into this new version of yourself. Or doors may close because that isn’t a space that allows you to cultivate your new identity. Be open to what occurs and surrender to the change that is calling you forward. 

I like to think about Eclipse Seasons as times of cosmic realignment. Where the universe comes and rearranges things to support you in aligning with your highest path. It may even feel like you’ve been plucked off of one path and placed right on another without much forewarning. Remembering that whatever occurs during this time is all for our highest good and highest path is so important. Change can feel overwhelming in the beginning, but after a while we can see how it was needed in order to get us where we needed to go. 

Over the next year and a half, the Eclipses will be taking place on the axis of Leo and Aquarius, where the Nodes just recently entered. This highlights a story or theme that will be evolving over the next 18 months. This Leo South Node Eclipse is the first in the cycle, kicking off whatever is going to be unfolding for you. 

Pay attention to what is ready to be released, what identities you’re ready to purge, and what doors are opening or closing for you. Notice what resistance comes up to this moment of letting go and intentionally try to soften into the process. And remember that this is a moment of cosmic alignment and an identity upgrade. 

With Eclipses it’s not a time to work with manifestation or big rituals, but rather to lean into surrender and honoring your nervous system. Take good care of yourself over August and utilize practices that nourish you. Here are a few things to lean into this month:

• Journal about whatever comes up and what you’re ready to let go of. 

• Take baths or showers and cleanse your energy. 

• Don’t overcommit yourself; give yourself plenty of space in case plans need to change.

• Meditation and quiet space to listen to what's coming up inside and calm your system. 

• Movement that allows energy to be moved through you healthily. 

• Honest conversations with loved ones.

Sagittarius: Your education, how you learn or share knowledge, teaching or writing, your long-term goals, the wisdom or philosophies you’ve gained and how you use or relate to them.
